Scotland is facing an increased risk of summer drought in 2025 after months of below-average rainfall, with parts of the country, such as Angus and Fife, experiencing ten consecutive months of dry conditions. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has warned that groundwater levels are already lower than those seen before the 2022 drought, and river flows are currently "low to extremely low." While Moray is an exception due to higher winter rainfall, most regions are seeing signs of water scarcity. SEPA is urging businesses to act now to manage water use and build climate resilience, noting that prolonged dry periods are becoming more common due to climate change. The agency plans to begin weekly water scarcity updates in May and is working with the Scottish Government, water providers, and industries to monitor and manage the situation sustainably.
