Climate crisis on track to destroy capitalism, warns top insurer

Allianz board member Günther Thallinger warned that extreme climate-related losses are increasingly beyond what the insurance industry can absorb. Without insurance coverage, key financial activities such as mortgages, investments, and infrastructure financing could collapse, posing a fundamental threat to the viability of capitalism. He stated that if global temperatures reach 3°C, many high-risk regions will become “uninsurable,” and markets will undergo rapid and severe repricing. This risk extends beyond housing to agriculture, transportation, and industry, potentially wiping entire economic values off financial ledgers — a climate-driven market failure. Reports show that extreme weather caused $2 trillion in damages between 2013 and 2023, with another $400 billion in 2024. In Australia, disaster recovery spending has surged sevenfold over six years, reflecting the accelerating pace of climate impacts. Thallinger also criticized the retreat of some financial institutions from climate action following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s election, during which he dismissed such efforts as a “green scam.” This political shift weakened momentum at a critical time. “The cost of inaction is far greater than the cost of transition and adaptation,” Thallinger emphasized. Although clean energy technologies already exist, he stressed that what’s lacking is the necessary speed and scale of implementation. He urged the financial sector to prioritize sustainability goals equally alongside financial ones, warning that without this shift, the basic conditions for markets and civilization cannot be sustained.
