Switzerland and Italy have adjusted part of their border in the Alps due to climate change-induced glacier melting, particularly affecting areas near the Matterhorn and popular ski resorts. The shift in natural boundaries has prompted both nations to redefine their border, with Switzerland approving the change recently while Italy's approval is still pending. The Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network reported a 4% loss in glacier volume in 2023, highlighting the ongoing impact of warm summers and low winter snowfall. Experts warn that without significant greenhouse gas reductions, major glaciers, such as the Aletsch, could vanish within a generation.
